Character Description

Marisa is the female main character of IMK. She was a child prodigy who worked for the previous king and queen of Mayfield as an advisor. She now works with their son Rex, who also became her best friend when she was still living in the old Mayfield. In fact, Rex is her only friend. Unlike Rex, Marisa has a lot of trouble making new friends due to her no nonsense attitude. She is serious almost all the time. It is so bad that even when she was 12 adults would feel very intimidated by her. Marisa's past is shrouded in mystery. One day she just suddenly appeared at the castle. Rex was young back then so he doesn't remember much, but doesn't ask because he knows she isn't ready to talk about it.

IMK - Rex

Character Description

Rex is the main male character of IMK. He is a young prince of Mayfield Kingdom, which was heavily damaged in a war when he was 10. His parents were also killed. Rex spent 5 years learning all there is to know about ruling a kingdom and is now ready to return and rebuild his home. He is accompanied by his childhood friend and advisor Marisa. Although Rex does not have much gold for rebuilding, he is confident that everything will work out for him in the end. As suggested by Marisa, Rex begins hiring Scouters, people dedicated to fighting monsters and exploring dungeons. Even though they do the actual fighting, it is Rex who will have to decide the most efficient teams for specific areas and whether to invest gold in equipment advances or not. Even though he is just 15, Rex is quite smart. Other than when Marisa was 15, Rex is probably the smartest 15-year-old Mayfield has ever seen. Rex has a very kind heart, always wishing the best for his people. This allows him to easily make friends.

Conclusion: Rex's total magic is slightly above average, but he specializes in nothing, so none of his abilities are that impressive.

TypeError: Error #1009

TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

I'm sure that most people who work with Flash regularly can recognize this annoying error message. Most of the time it is fairly easy to recognize what you did wrong, but in some cases it may drive you insane to debug your Flash application. This error is caused by referencing an object that is currently not in memory. If you did the typical mistake it should be easy to notice what you did wrong. Just select Debug Movie and then find out where you referenced a non-existing object.

As I have recently discovered, in some cases it may not be obvious that an object does not exist. Flash's interface allows you to do so much, but with code everywhere and the ability to adjust properties of Movie Clips outside of ActionScript, you will likely run into conflicts every once in a while. The situation I ran into was this. I had a Movie Clip, let's call it Movie_A. Movie_A had two frames. On the first frame there was a bunch of sub Movie Clips. Let's call one of them Movie_B. On the second frame there were no Movie Clips, just a bitmap image.
This was my code:
Movie_A.gotoAndStop(1);
Movie_A.Movie_B.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, Movie_BMouseOver);
Movie_A.Movie_B.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OUT, Movie_BMouseOut);

Theoretically, this should work. In the first line the parent, Movie_A goes to the first frame where Movie_B exists. In the second and third lines, I add listeners that will check if the mouse rolls over and out of Movie_B. What's this? I get an Error #1009! Movie_B exists doesn't it? That is what I thought at first too. For some reason it seems like Movie_A takes a while to transition to frame 1. This means that it could be in a frame where Movie_B does not exist and that means Error #1009. So what did I do to fix this? I simply removed the second frame from Movie_A. This got rid of the problem immediately. Luckily for me, the second frame was not very important so I did not have to spend a lot of time editing my ActionScript.

Using nested Movie Clips is not a bad thing, in fact I encourage Flash devolopers to try using them. It's just that using them along with multiple frames can be very dangerous. It is easy to get an error that might take a while to debug. If you are going to use both multiple frames and nested Movie Clips then you should be very careful!

Note: This was an error I got using CS3, ActionScript 9.

IMK - Monsters

Monsters were created during the Magic Boom, a period in which scientists invented a way for humans to use special abilities. At first the scientists tested their invention on animals and it backfired. They turned into deadly monsters that strike fear into the hearts of many. In 300 years, the monsters multiplied and began inhabiting all areas of the Earth. The increase in monsters has resulted in a decrease in animals and plant life. Some people now choose to eat monsters since they are almost identical to animals except more vicious.

The final experiment of the Magic Boom scientists involved giving a substantial amount of magic to eight dragonflies. The experiment caused them to go berserk and mutate into actual dragons. The dragons are the Fire Dragon, Water Dragon, Ice Dragon, Thunder Dragon, Earth Dragon, Sky Dragon, Gold Dragon and Black Dragon. Little information is known on these dragons, but people have seen first-hand that the Black Dragon is the most dangerous out of them all. Nothing is known about the Gold Dragon because it has not been seen ever since it left the lab.

Although the monsters are an unwanted pest for most people, some have managed to get quite rich of off them by selling them for food, using their fur, etc. Monsters are usually smart enough to avoid towns where people are, but some will foolishly attempt to attack people. Since most people now have magic, they can deal with most monsters if they stick together.

Overview

Magic is a term used to describe a living organism's ability to create a sequence of chemical reactions in rapid succession. These chemical reactions give the appearance of matter appearing out of thin air, so people referred to it as magic. The scientists that were responsible for magic 300 years ago greatly opposed the name and tried to get it changed. As more and more people started to use the term magic, opposition decreased and eventually most scientists gave up.

Magic was created by a group of scientists working in an unknown location. The creation is known as the Magic Boom. At first magic was tested with small animals such as bugs, then smaller animals and eventually larger animals. People think that the scientists were going against laws, so they worked secretly. Many of the first experiments ended up in horrible failures. The animals deformed and became wild beasts which are now called Monsters. Eventually the scientists succeeded in making a fairly stable and fairly painless operation for a human to get magic. It was then that they showed their invention to the world. People were amazed at what they saw and flooded the scientists with requests. The knowledge of how to perform the operation was sent all over the world. Most people got the operation, but some did not because they feared that something would go wrong. They were absolutely right.

Problems

At first many humans were either given too much magic or its composition was not split equally. In the first case the human will experience mental problems, control problems or get sick. This was solved by sealing the access to magic, but then it would be better if that individual never got magic in the first place. In the second case magic was got distributed unevenly in the following categories:

Red Magic (increases physical strength)
Blue Magic (strengthens external chemical reactions)
Green Magic (protects the body)

Each human that underwent the operation at first had a basic type of magic. After about a year it diverges into some combination of Red Magic, Blue Magic and Green Magic. If there was an unbalance the human had a good chance of experiencing some kind of mutation. Luckily the mutation is not harmful to human health, but it can cause physical alterations that some people may not like. For example, some people grew wings, some tails and some had the shape of their ears changed.

Afterwards

Now, 300 years later. Almost every human has the ability to use magic. They either got it from an operation or from their parents when they were born since the DNA was adjusted as well. It has become a part of everyone's life. Those who can not use magic face some hardship in the workforce because a lot of jobs are now built around magic.

One thing that still remains a mystery is the scientists themselves. Shortly after they shared their invention with the world they suddenly disappeared. Just who exactly were they? Should they be honoured for their invention of magic or should they be shamed for their creation of monsters?

Mayfield

Mayfield was once a very rich kingdom until a great war occurred between it and Zircon in the year 23XX. The war lasted five years and ended with the destruction of much of Mayfield. Mayfield was also forced to surrender a small piece of land to Zircon. King Bernard and Queen Seraphine were killed leaving their young child, Prince Rex parent-less. Since Prince Rex was only ten, he could not officially rule, so each town in Mayfield had to rely on their local leaders. This did not go very well. The economy suffered and each town had difficulty handling monster attacks. Five years later, Prince Rex returns to his home and begins to rebuild. With the help of his advisor, Marisa, he learns how to run a kingdom. Though it has been five years, the war is still shrouded in mystery. Nobody knows exactly why a tiny piece of land could start such a big war. This is something that Prince Rex will soon discover...

Zircon

Zircon was also a rich kingdom and still is. Although they were not allies with Mayfield, they had never been hostile before the war. When Zircon suddenly attacked Mayfield, citizens of both kingdoms were extremely confused. Like Mayfield's forces, most of Zircon's forces were not told what the reason of the war was. King Vyod had always treated its citizens well in the past, so they assumed that there must be a serious reason why he was going to war with Mayfield and supported him. Zircon was extremely aggressive in the war. They still suffered some losses, but it was small compared to Mayfield's losses. After five years, Zircon was successful and stole the piece of land from Mayfield. Since the citizens of Zircon were still left in the dark about the war, some of them began to distrust King Vyod. What Zircon is doing with the land they obtained is another mystery. Only a select few are allowed to set foot on the land.

Plans for The Month

I've got something big that's been in development for a while. Much bigger than any flash game I've done in the past. It's an rpg/strategy/sim with some visual novel styled cutscenes. Currently I've written over 40 pages of dialogue and I'm not even half done! I won't set a release date since there is so much to do and it is quite hard to estimate the amount of time that everything else will take.

What I will do, however, is post a bunch of information on Cool Bgames every few days. Some days I might talk about the game terms and some days I might give summaries on the characters. I plan on posting some images of the characters so check them out when they're posted! Oh and the characters are Anime styled.

I'll make a trailer eventually, probably when I'm finished writing the story and got a bunch of cutscenes working. I plan to make the gameplay fun, but I think that the cutscenes will be where the game shines. If you've played the game Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King then this game should be pretty easy to get used to since there are some similarities. Even if you haven't I intend to make it simple enough to play in a short time.

Instructions:
To move, click on an animal then click elsewhere to have it move to that location. The goal is to destroy as many enemies as you can before they destroy your farm. Farm Hazards has built-in help as well.

Description:
Fast playing, fruit-themed game. In this simple game you have to stock your barrel with ammo (fruits) then launch it at a hungry monster.

Instructions:
You have 60 seconds to get a score. Drag and drop the displayed fruit into the barrel as fast as you can. Be careful though, drag the wrong one in and you'll lose points! Once the barrel is full, time a click to feed a hungry monster.
